History Of Winchester Guns

The name Winchester is synonymous with the lever action “repeating” rifle; “the gun that won the west“.

The Winchester Repeating Arms company has been around since the mid-1800s. They introduced the Winchester Model 1866 rim fire rifle in 1866 and in 1873, the Model 1873, with its center fire cartridge, was introduced.

By 1883, famed gun designer John Browning had joined them and is credited with designing, among others, the:

• Winchester single shot Model 1885 shotgun
• Winchester lever action Model 1887 shotgun
• Winchester pump action Model 1897 shotgun

Winchester also developed the first self-loading rifle for commercial use.
